It’s a tough time of the year. A lot of people haven’t got much money due to the Christmas splurge. On top of that, the days are short and cold, and with Covid getting bad again it’s fair to assume a lot of people’s mental health might be taking a bit of a hit with them finding it hard to relax. Mental health is a strange thing. What improves it for one person might not work for the next. It’s why it’s essential to try and apply the advice to yourself in a bespoke way, instead of taking it as gospel first. Here are four tips to your mental health.

MAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF

You can’t focus on your mental health if you’re super busy. If you don’t have any time for yourself, you can’t do things to relax. You’ll enter a spiral. This often happens to people who are caring for others or those who are overworking. It might be time to think of other options. There are some care homes here, and you might want to speak to your boss about taking a step back or getting some help. It would help if you made time for yourself. You might think your thriving at the moment, but as soon as something changes, you can quickly be up against the wall. They do say time can heal all.

FORCE YOURSELF TO WALK

Get out and about. Being stuck at home on lockdown isn’t mentally healthy for most of us. If you’re feeling down, or rough, a long walk can clear away the cobwebs. It isn’t the answer to genuine, grounded mental health problems, but it can certainly give you that little boost. You can build on this too. If you enjoy it, try to get to new places. You can move onto running and get fit. Do it with a friend or family member for that enhanced boost of motivation.

GIVE YOURSELF A PROJECT

If you’ve got nothing to focus on, then you’ll end up thinking about the bad; this is especially true for those who have recently lost their job. Give yourself something to focus on (besides how stressful things are just now!). It might be painting a room in your house. Or it could be finally setting up your own business. Having something positive to push towards and focus on is vital, so finding a project around something you enjoy or something you’ve wanted to do for a while can help your mental health. It stops the dwelling.

Everyone knows that bad eating habits can contribute to mental health problems. Bad drinking habits do the same too. Cut back on the alcohol, which is naturally a depressant. Stop drinking sugary drinks like coke. Focus on water. It can boost your energy, give you better skin and help flush out the antioxidants. If you couple this with getting out and walking you’ll find your health gets a nice boost. More energy means a happier life. Try to challenge yourself on your water consumption. Get through a certain amount of bottles a day or buy a bottle which shows your levels of consumption.
